5th International Women's Conference Includes WP Workshop on Finances and Leadership

Left: Kenya workshop participant joyfully committing to start a local widows group.

Traffic was stopped in the streets of Kisumu, Kenya as a gala parade kicked off the 5th International Widows' Conference this past November.

Widows are historically marginalized in Kenya, but on this day hundreds of widows proudly marched to build public awareness, escorted by a brass band, drums and a police motorcade. They were also honored as never before by coverage in The Nation, Kenya's national newspaper.

Continuing our relationship building with women leaders in Africa, Women's Perspective was among the presenters at the Conference, where Rosemary Williams gave two workshops on money, spirituality and leadership. Rosemary encouraged the widows to see themselves as the community leaders they are.

"I was excited to hear the workshop participants as they committed to using the information they obtained at the Conference. They planned to apply their new skills at home where they will change lives for the better with projects like tree planting and farming partnerships," said Rosemary.

Among the highlights of the Conference was the reading of a letter from U.S. Senator Barack Obama, greeting the participants and commending their leadership and shared sense of purpose. (Read Sen. Obama's letter.)

Update on the Mothers of St. Rita, Dunga, Kenya

Left: Flooding swept away a vegetable garden along with nappier grass for the cow, leaving food in short supply.

Readers will recall that Bernadette Otieno and the Mothers of St. Rita care for HIV/AIDS orphans in the village of Dunga, Kenya.

The winter 2006 rainy season was much more intense than normal, leaving much of Dunga under water. Many families were sheltered temporarily at the local school, which is located on relatively high ground. As a result, the school was closed. The village was cut off from other parts of the country because flooding closed the road between Nairobi and Kisumu.

Despite these setbacks, Bernadette celebrates the excellent performance on standard exams by the orphans in her care. The children are able to attend school thanks to the Mothers of St. Rita with support from caring contributors.

If you would like to help rebuild some homes that were destroyed or support some children in school, please email us.

Intern Katie Phelan Joins WP

Left: WP intern Katie Phelan.

We're delighted to welcome our new intern, Katie Phelan. We'll let this energetic and dedicated young woman greet you in her own words:

Hello! I am Katie Phelan, Women's Perspective's new intern. Currently, I am a sophomore at Fairfield University majoring in international studies with a potential minor in politics. Not being an East Coast native (I am from Madison, Wisconsin), I have immensely enjoyed experiencing the East Coast culture and ways.

It has been an amazing experience working with Rosemary these past few months. Lately I feel like a sponge with all the new, interesting, and valuable knowledge I am absorbing. I frequently find myself saying, "Wow, I didn't know that," which is great and I know will continue.

Already, I have met many extremely interesting people and dabbled in an array of different types of work. Women's Perspective has allowed me to receive a unique glimpse into the inner workings of a non-profit organization and the invaluable chance to experience the dedication and passion that goes into its functioning. I am so excited and feel greatly privileged to have the chance to work at Women's Perspective and look forward to many future endeavors here.
