JOURNALING QUESTIONS

When Global Needs Seem Too Overwhelming
We invite you to respond to these questions in your personal journal on money and spirituality:

Hurricane Katrina, HIV/AIDS in Africa, the earthquake in Kashmir - the news brings us daily images of disaster and suffering.

  • Do I feel overwhelmed or helpless in the face of news about calamity?

  • In the past year, what condition or disaster has touched me the most?

  • Why did this situation speak to me?

  • When responding to a disaster, what kinds of activities have felt most satisfying to me (e.g., gathering food for shipment, giving blood, donating money, etc.)?

  • What kind of activities give me the feeling that I have made a difference, however small my role, in responding to a disaster?

If you wish to share your reflections with our readers, please email us.

Welcome to the November issue of the Women’s Perspective newsletter, which reports on our trip to Kenya to film women leaders for WP’s documentary, Leadership: The Other Side of Tragedy.

Message from Rosemary Williams
This fall I was privileged to travel to Kenya, where I was awed and astonished by African women who are making a difference, creating change in communities that suffer many ills. None of us can fix the world, but each of us can discover where our hearts lead us to spend our time, talent and resources. At Women’s Perspective, we help you connect with your deepest dreams for the world and harness your own personal power to transform the reality we all share.

WP Films Documentary on African Women Leaders

Toting cameras and sound equipment in the blazing African sun, a Women’s Perspective delegation described filming in Kenya as exhilarating and exhausting, inspiring and heart-breaking.

In October WP traveled to Kenya to begin filming Leadership: The Other Side of Tragedy, our documentary featuring women leaders in Africa: Achola Pala Okeya, Margaret Auma, Bernadette Otieno and Rose Nyamunga. WP board member Jennifer Boyd, an award-winning television producer, directed the photography while board member Kate Emery served as sound engineer, and Rosemary Williams led the trip.

Leadership: The Other Side of Tragedy examines the lives and work of four unique women leaders who are making a big difference in their communities despite tremendous obstacles. They offer us models of courage, imagination and creativity in their personal responses to global needs.

Kate Emery: Compassionate Leadership in Action

WP board member Kate Emery infuses her business and community service with the spiritual value of compassion, which she defines as “being able to connect with others and recognize that we’re all one.”

A successful businesswoman, Kate operates Walker Systems Support, an information technology firm in Connecticut. At work, her compassionate ethic is expressed by the desire to measure her company by its contributions to employees and the outside community, not just shareholder value, a model that she calls “beyond profit.” Kate explains: “Walker is not just about making a buck. I want to go beyond profit to being a company whose resources are used to improve the world we share.”

Kate shares her energy and profits with Global Harmony Institute (GHI), the nonprofit she founded to help develop compassionate leaders. GHI provides programs and resources to corporations and organizations in training adults and young people in compassionate leadership models. GHI is also interested in giving people the inspiration, resources, and connections they need to put their compassion into action. “Lots of people want to help address global issues, but they don’t know where or how to start."
