Your Monthly Money Journey

This month, you identify your money facts, the specifics about your financial resources.

This is an excellent opportunity to gather together in one file or notebook the information that pertains to your financial life. This process enables you to see the whole picture - perhaps for the first time.

Before you "count the money," take time to "count your blessings:"
  • Intangible riches of family, friends and community
  • Your spiritual connections
  • Your health and environment

Financial awareness checklist
The goal is to find out what you know and where you need to find out more. Simply answer yes or no about whether you have and know these resources:

  • A banker
  • A broker
  • An attorney
  • An accountant
  • If you could borrow money in your own name?

Do you ...
  • Review your credit report?
  • Make your own investment decisions?
  • Understand the tax return you sign?
  • Understand your retirement benefits?
  • Have an IRA?
  • Know the specifics of your insurance coverage?
  • Have a will?
Collect your financial records
  • Financial accounts and investments
  • Loans and mortgages
  • Real estate and valuable personal property
  • Retirement and insurance documents
Step back and review
What gaps in your financial information do you want to fill in?

How are you feeling now as you start to get clearer about your basic financial facts?

Next month:
Uncover your "money feelings," the feelings that come up when you work with your financial information.

Have you recently seen a new connection between your financial life and your core values? Whether you choose to get involved with Women's Perspective through a book group, a retreat, a workshop or a transformational travel trip, your experience will be full of these connections.

This participant in a midwestern Money & Spirituality book group shares her journey over the past six months:

"I'm finally getting it! I deserve prime time. My time IS valuable, and I no longer have to accept under- earning or allowing others to make me lose focus on my goals for myself."

We invite you to share with us and our readers a time when you had such an "aha!" moment about money and spirit. There's no need to identify yourself; just tell us about your experience and your feelings.

Money & Spirit Around the Globe

Peace X Peace Film Airs June 11
Did you know that women are more likely than soldiers to be the casualties of war? Women around the world are standing up for peace. Peace X Peace has produced a moving documentary film that follows women peacemakers from four different conflict/crisis zones: Afghanistan, Argentina, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Burundi. Narrated by Academy Award-winning actress Jessica Lange, this film redefines the role of women in war.

A special one hour version of Peace by Peace: Women on the Frontlines is scheduled to air on PBS on June 11 at 10 pm ET (check your local listings). The show is optional programming for PBS stations nationwide, with the decision of whether or not to air it made by the 300+ member stations. Thanksgiving 2004: Join WP in Africa

(left) A typical garden on the outskirts of Kisumu, Kenya.

You're invited to join Women's Perspective on a sojourn to Africa to attend the International HIV/AIDS Widows Conference in Kisumu, Kenya, to teach and be taught by widows of HIV/AIDS. The tentative dates for the trip are November 20 - December 6, 2004.

During this year's conference, Widows of Destiny, the Women's Perspective group will talk with more than 200 attendees about "Financial Destiny." This is a key topic for HIV/AIDS widows, who typically are economically disadvantaged and without family or community support.

In 2002, we attended this moving three-day conference, learning about the toll that HIV/AIDS has taken on women, their families and entire villages. We worked with African women in small groups, finding ways to harness our resources to help them better their lives.

Let us know if you'd like to be on the mailing list about this trip to receive details as they become available.
